Winning the Inch War

                                             Welcome to our blog

If you want something bad enough, you find a way,

if you don’t, you find an excuse”

A Department of Health study in 2010 stated that in the UK, nearly 63% of adults aged 16+ and 30% of children aged 2-15 were either overweight or obese and these levels had more than tripled in the last 25years.

It’s estimated that at any one time, 1 in 4 people in the UK are on a diet or consciously trying to lose weight.  Many more studies show that  about 90% of ‘dieters’ regain within two years, all and often much more of the weight they previously lost.  Obviously something is wrong with this picture as these uncomfortable facts shows that whatever they are doing simply isn’t working.

Over the course of the next few weeks or months (years?), we hope to use this blog to shed some light on what may be going wrong and as an individual, how you may be able to put it right.  Often, diets and exercise programmes fail because they have the wrong target; namely weight loss. All the focus is bent towards achieving a reduced body-weight, whereas the true target is inch loss and this goal is often lost in the battle with the bathroom scales.  If your aim is to drop a dress size or a couple of notches on your belt, then equating this to a specific weight loss amount is actually irrelevant, as the true test is how your clothes fit, not what the scales say.  Cutting one of your legs off will make you lighter but your clothes will still fit the same (apart from on one leg of course!).

A lot of the problem stems from a lack of understanding as to how your body’s complex biology works.  Add to this the hundreds of diet myths and thousands of quick-fix weight loss products and you have all the ingredients of a recipe for disaster.

Hopefully, this and the forthcoming articles/blogs will expose these myths and not only inform you as to what  you can and can’t do to lose excess inches but more importantly tell you why you can’t possibly lose them the way many adverts/products/magazines claim you can.

The first blog is called Evolution Part 1; Exercise and fat loss; because we believe to truly know where we are going with our lives, we have to know where we came from and evolution is where it all begins.

Even if you don’t have a weight problem, we’re sure you know someone who has, so we hope you find these articles interesting and food for thought!

We are personal trainers, nutritionists and owners of Get Physical, a private training facility in Sheffield.  We have both been extremely active participants in the Health & Fitness Industry for 30 years and in that time we have written numerous magazine articles and a book called Dump the Diets – you don’t have to live like a saint to have the body of an angel’.  More importantly, we draw our knowledge from years of research, an unending quest for the real truth about fat loss and from the real life experiences of many thousands of people with weight problems that we have helped and advised over the years.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions or comments. We will do our best to answer every query but as we have to work for a living with clients who pay our wages, please be patient.

Many thanks
